Warehouses and factories were the first to be taken over by robots, followed by bars and restaurants, where they\u2019re also becoming an increasingly common sight. Now, robots are poised to enter our homes as well. And they\u2019re using our children to do it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Children playing with robots \u2013 what does this mean for their development?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oaWC9UOeLb0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, we have witnessed an influx of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richardvanhooijdonk.com\/en\/keynote\/the-future-of-education\/\">social robots<\/a> aimed at children, such as Jibo, Kuri, Cozmo, and M.A.X. Unlike ordinary children\u2019s toys, these robots are equipped with AI-powered personalities that allow them to interact with children in ways that simply weren\u2019t possible before. They can recognise their faces and voices, respond to their questions in meaningful ways, and even simulate emotion and empathy. In other words, they aren\u2019t designed to be just another toy in your child\u2019s collection, they\u2019re designed to be their friend, their companion, and they\u2019re slowly blurring the lines between machines and living beings. But is that actually a good thing? How do these artificial relationships affect children\u2019s mental development and social behaviour?<\/p>\n<h2>Manufacturers claim robotic toys provide children with educational and social benefits<\/h2>\n<p>According to manufacturers, robotic toys provide numerous benefits for <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richardvanhooijdonk.com\/en\/blog\/will-robots-kids-future-toys-teachers-companions\/\">child development<\/a>. In addition to being educational, they also help them develop social skills and boost their creativity. \u201cRobots are about engaging you socially and emotionally to help you do what you want to do,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-switch\/wp\/2017\/11\/17\/these-robots-dont-want-your-job-they-want-your-love\/?utm_term=.3fe1cd33a77c\">says<\/a> Jibo\u2019s creator, Cynthia Breazeal. \u201cThat makes technology accessible and fun and engaging for a much broader demographic.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30381\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30381 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.richardvanhooijdonk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/05\/robots-for-kidsgbnghn.jpg\" alt=\"A girl wearing blue headphones playing with a robotic toy with a smartphone and tablet in front of her\" width=\"800\" height=\"453\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">According to manufacturers, robotic toys provide numerous benefits for child development<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While they\u2019re still far from capable of fully replacing human contact, robots are becoming increasingly sophisticated and human-like. This trend is likely to continue in the future and could forever change how we interact with machines. \u201cRobots touch something deeply human within us,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/cynthia_breazeal_the_rise_of_personal_robots\/transcript\">adds<\/a> Breazeal. \u201cAnd so whether they&#8217;re helping us to become creative and innovative, or whether they&#8217;re helping us to feel more deeply connected despite distance, or whether they are our trusted sidekick who&#8217;s helping us attain our personal goals in becoming our highest and best selves, for me, robots are all about people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Some people are concerned they could have a negative effect on child development<\/h2>\n<p>However, not everyone agrees with this assessment, particularly when it concerns children. Toys like teddy bears and dolls are important for children\u2019s mental development as so-called transitional objects that help them deal with separation anxiety and provide comfort whenever they\u2019re feeling stressed, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/should-you-get-your-child-an-ai-doll-this-holiday-89115\">according<\/a> to the English paediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"iPal Robot, The Child-Friendly Babysitter For Your Kids, Meets Mixed Expectations | CNBC\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hw4r6EUvLHk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Children often develop deep emotional connections with their toys and imbue them with certain qualities, or sometimes even invent whole personalities for them. Since they\u2019re the active agent in these relationships, children are aware of the fact that every action that the toy \u2018performs\u2019 is entirely their own invention and that the toy isn\u2019t actually alive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.upenn.edu\/~deenas\/papers\/weisberg-oxfordhandbook-2013.pdf\">According to<\/a> Deena Skolnick Weisberg, a senior fellow in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, children learn to distinguish between what\u2019s real and what\u2019s not when they are about three years old. However, a toy that moves and talks on its own and responds to its surroundings in a human-like fashion could lead to confusion in the child and make it unable to tell whether the toy is alive or not.<\/p>\n<h2>Could robots endanger the development of empathy in children?<\/h2>\n<p>Sherry Turkle, a professor of the social studies of science and technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is one of the most vocal opponents of children\u2019s robotic toys. Her main concern is that these toys could affect a child\u2019s mental development and their ability to develop empathy. Everything robots do is just a simulation, something that\u2019s been programmed into them. They don\u2019t have real emotions. They can\u2019t feel empathy. They can only feign it. But children don\u2019t know that, and they get attached to them the same way they would to a human being. However, these relationships are extremely superficial and there\u2019s a distinct possibility that the child will think that\u2019s how a real relationship is supposed to work, which could affect their ability to really understand other people and connect with them.<\/p>\n<p>To truly understand another human being, you need to be able to listen and put yourself in their shoes, which is something children can\u2019t learn when interacting with a machine. \u201cIf children learn to respond to \u2018as if\u2019 empathy, we are not preparing them for the complexity, nuance, negotiations of true empathy, true listening,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/mach\/science\/your-kid-friends-alexa-psychologist-what-means-their-development-ncna896576?cid=eml_mach_20180806\">says<\/a> Turkle. \u201cAristotle, like Jibo, like Alexa, like Siri, like Cozmo, cannot be in a \u2018relationship\u2019 with your child. They are empathy machines that can only put children in a position of pretend empathy. And pretend empathy will never teach the real kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The main question is whether it\u2019s a good idea for an object to be able to simulate human presence, emotions, and empathy. Or, should we take that ability away from them? \u201cI&#8217;m concerned that once companies understand how persuasive and engaging this technology [is], I wonder whether they might use to it to sell people things, or serve an interest other than their own,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/robot-ethics-kate-darling-1.3818499\">says<\/a> Kate Darling, a robotics researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. \u201cThen there&#8217;s the question of violence and empathy: when robots can really mimic a living thing, and when you strike the robot it reacts as though it&#8217;s in pain, does that desensitize you to striking a real living thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robotic toys are the product of our societal and technological trends, and they\u2019re unlikely to go away. While they can be very useful in certain contexts, they also come with some serious ethical concerns. So, should you get one for your child? That\u2019s up to you, but if you do, make sure to do your research beforehand and learn everything you can about the toy you\u2019re bringing into your child\u2019s life. Find out what the toy will be saying to them and what kind of values it will expose them to. Explain to your child that it\u2019s just a machine and not an actual person.
